    • @TheMilsimPerspective
      @TheMilsimPerspective Рік тому

      Yeah that took a bit of doing, It's a QLS on a CUBL on a MLS fork. I had to drill holes on the CUBL to mount it on the fork but it worked well once secured, I used a long CUBL to drop the holster to a manageable height.

      Looks like a good option. I've actually reduced the amount of water I carry on my fighting load to 1 Qt/L as I continue to define my load carry systems. I learned a lot running this kit but have since swapped it for a Jay Jays chameleon kit and am working on flushing that out. www.fivesevenconsulting.com/2023/04/26/lines-loads-and-orders-load-carry-system-codification/

    Coming from an AO that could be considered northern where we see between 2-4 feet of snow for about half the year I have to say that I could take or leave a snow collar. You can always use a ruck liner or drum liner instead. Also, in cold weather or at altitude isobutane stoves suck. I use them for backpacking sometimes but have gravitated to a small twig burner with the capability of burning solid fuel tabs and an alcohol burner. It takes longer to boil water but you can pack a 500ml or 1000ml bottle of alcohol and get quit a few boils, or save the alcohol/fuel tabs for crap weather days and burn sticks for the most part. That is, of course, if you are usually in a wooded area as I am. Good stuff!

    I'm looking into taking some One Shepherd courses so that point about being able to swap our your harness for the miles gear is really good to know. Were you able to use that gear at One Shepherd even though it's mostly multicam? I have a bunch of multicam myself and was concerned I wouldn't be able to bring any of it since their website seems pretty strict about using green gear. Perhaps the multicam is green enough?

    • @TheMilsimPerspective
      @TheMilsimPerspective 2 роки тому

      Actually this is left over from a time when 1S uniform regulations in the field simply called for "a subdued color" for LBE. Green is required at this time, no camouflage patterns. Fortunately, Velocity sells these pouches in Ranger Green and many manufacturers that sell to European nations also produce items in various greens.

    I got the same bag and I’d have to say that it’s the best carrying bag that I’ve had and I’ve had a lot of mystery ranch camelback eberlestock and all that good stuff but this one is just right in size to weight ratio and I find that I can put everything i want in it with several different way to go about it. Also the beaver tail is simply brilliant. Somebody could make a lot of money offering different options to hook into the loops of this and the dg16 packs.

    I was recon with the Airborne unit (3/325 ABCT) in Vicenza late 80s early 90s. We still rocked the LBE and Alice packs, though we modified them to fit our needs. We trained alot with the British Paras, and we adopted some of their ideas. Even using 4 man recce teams as we were always under manned. Great kit, very adaptable, comfortable, and keeps one from over heating.

    Suggestions/observations from alpine/winter warfare schools/experience: Try leukotape for blisters/medical tape/duct tape replacement, unlike moleskin it's water resistant and the much better adhesive/backer will remain applied for over two weeks even when continuously immersed. Dermatone is clinically proven to prevent sunburn and chillblains. Cat crap for antifogging of eyepro and optics. Gear repair tape does permanent IR-compliant ("tenacious tape" as I recall)gear repair, a roll can be kept in sustainment gear in a pill bottle, or possibly in your little lightstick holder, I keep two pieces attached to the inner cover of my notebook. Gel based small tubes (0.1oz IIRC) of superglue for gear repair is easier to apply and does dual duty to externally close/protect cuts and especially damaged nails/cuticles. One teammember should have a small tube of shoe goo in case of a life/mission threatening boot sole failure. A small tea candle weighs less than an ounce and when combined with your casualty blanket provides an emergency weather resistant warming shelter with equivalent BTUs to having another person with you. All batteries lithium for cold weather/longevity, add an 18650 cell as that's pretty clearly the direction weapon lights are going. Depending on logistical support rechargeable AA/AAAs and a small power exchanger have been a godsend, they may be viable for you in a sustainment role. A pocket stitched onto the sleeve of an undershirt will keep your batteries/face paint/grease pencil warm without getting uncomfortable under straps/harnesses/vests. A nyoflume (spelling?) pack liner for a top loading ruck solves waterproofing/waterlogging, and a light coating of hot pink or orange spraypaint in the bottom/sides makes it easier to find things, and replaces a VS-17/similar for signal/rescue. A silkweight sleeping bag liner can add 5-10 degrees to your comfort rating for only a few ounces more, but more importantly keeps your main bag clean, which preserves it's insulation value for long duration missions or any deployment without laundry support. If you're going to hump two sleeping pads (honestly air+foam is a criminally underrated setup for cold weather infantry work) try a quilt setup, you cut your insulation weight by half with very little temp penalty if done right. If climate conditions and your skills at moisture management are up for it consider uncoated down. A good/affordable entry point is a 2nd hand 500+ fill puffy top, sized 2XL or larger, which will plus up your sleep system to the point you may not need anything other than the green bag, you can layer it over your gear post-action to stop from freezing to death while you pull security The Nalgene 1L canteens can be kept from freezing layered against your kidneys comfortably, if you need more carriage the 1L bottles filled to 600ml and stored inverted will freeze from the bottom up leaving the top drinkable without busting the bottle. Ditch the MREs if at all possible in general, but especially for cold weather. Water weight wears you down faster, and being rendered inedible by freezing then requires more fuel/weight/time to make them consumable. Freeze dried is ideal, dry homemade soup mixes vacuum sealed are great as well because intake of warm liquids and physical warming decreases weight/space of chemical food calories needed to rewarm you and also helps hydrate. Teas, ciders, and cocoas should be carried and dispersed liberally for morale and physical warming, coffee as both a diuretic and an addictive substance should not. In cold weather nuts/seeds/fruits/sausages/hard cheeses are for snacking during the day/activity, provide fats to keep you fueled without needing to pause activity or be rewarmed, provide proteins to recover, and provide fiber to keep your gut settled. Freeze dried, dehydrated, or dry/boil meals rewarm upon awakening, as your body naturally cools while you sleep, and the end of duty meal keeps you warm through the night through physical warming, as well as providing fats/proteins to warm/recover your body while you sleep. Take a small plastic nalgene of olive oil (unbreakable) and add it to everything, your body will burn off 6000cals or more depending on exertion/temps. A reusable chemical hand warmer (reactivated by immersion in boiling water when you reheat meals) and a football-style muff handwarmer attached to the bottom of your plate carrier of the top of your belt line does wonders for maintaining dexterity. After rehydrating meals before sleep you can warm a canteen and chuck it in the bottom of your bag or up by your kidneys, keeping an empty water bottle for a piss bottle is well worth the 1oz weight penalty, toss it into the bottom of the bag to rewarm your footbox when you're done Possibly consider the sleeping pad on the bottom of your ruck, interfaces better with your belt line, protects the ruck bottom, keeps the inside cleaner. If you're humping a shelter half/poles you're anticipating being in an area you can't cut veg, consider having one man in the team sub poles/shelter for an assault ladder/casualty litter. IME the ladders tend to be more robust, lighter weight, and cheaper, particularly if you source something that isn't DOD-exclusive. You'll also generally find that from a weight/space perspective individual sleep shelters tend to be the least efficient, 2-3 man sleep cover systems are a solid balance between technical perks and tactical usability. Shared body heat increases comfort, lowers required insulation weights, increases recovery, has psychological benefits for both individual recovery/security and team building, smaller overall footprint leads to decreased security requirements, etc. Like everything else, shelter and food/cooking are both persistent individual requirements and generally more efficient when needs are aggregated and carriage is distributed.

    Do you know if you can strap a PRS rifle to the side of the ruck using the side pouch as a cup and tie downs at the top like the eberlestock V69 destroyer? Something like a Remington 700 in a KRG chassis.

    • @TheMilsimPerspective
      @TheMilsimPerspective 3 роки тому

      You can strap whatever you like to the side, the low pockets should hold the stock but the sleeve on the side is probably too narrow unless you intend to underload the ruck. Either way your muzzle is going to be way up in the air. There's a reason that dedicated rifle carrying rucks have the stock slung lower than the waist belt.

    Was good video, though I personally would keep the external frame. Find it doesn’t move seperate to body movements ie having to pick up the pace I found it moves with my body better. Was good to see though. I’m in Australia ex Australian army med discharged now vets pension. Yet getting away from the craziness of civilian life lol.
